April 2006 – Celebrate Earth Day, April 22nd

Joelle Fishman discusses the possibilities and necessities for changing control of Congress this November. GOP corruption and the unpopularity of the regime make it possible, but hard work is needed to build the electoral forces decisive for victory. In interviews, Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago discusses some of his views on culture and politics, and historian David Roediger talks about his latest book, Working Toward Whiteness.

In a special section on international developments, we present an article by Hannah Amireh, a leader of the Palestinian People’s Party, on the recent Palestinian Legislative Council elections and an excerpted version of the inaugural speech of President Evo Morales of Bolivia.

Look for commentaries on the battle to protect welfare, reproductive rights, immigration policy and the elections in Italy. As always, do not hesitate to send us your thoughts in a letter to the editor. Keep them coming.

In struggle,
