Forum scoop: Who was first on universal health care?
In a side note that could provoke some controversy, Sen. John Edwards, in one of his responses on health care, claimed, "I was the first candidate to come out with a universal health plan." According to the Edwards campaign website, Sen. Edwards began to describe a detailed plan as early as February 2007. For his part, Rep. Dennis Kucinich is a co-author of H.R. 676, a bill that would expand Medicare to cover all medical procedures for all people, a position he adopted several years ago. The Kucinich plan not only describes what it would do, but also details how it would be paid for. It has the added advantage of being a bill pending before Congress with nearly 80 co-sponsors. Kucinich's name appears on the version introduced in the 109th session of Congress in 2005 which is identical to the version introduced this past January. So to be accurate, Kucinich offered a universal health care plan even before he announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. When reached for comment a Kucinich campaign staffer said, "It is not a matter of who had the first plan, but of who has the best plan. We respect [Edwards'] plan. Do we agree with it? No." The Edwards campaign did not provide a requested comment before deadline. |
