HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 21 (acn) A group of Belgian citizens gathered in front of the US embassy in Brussels to ask the newly inaugurated American President Barack Obama, to release the five Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in the US.
On the day of the inauguration of President Obama, Belgian activists with the Movement for the Release of the Cuban Five raised their voices in front of the diplomatic mission and carried banners with signs calling for the freedom of the Cuban antiterrorists.
Likewise, a group of five artists who live and work in Belgium delivered a letter addressed to the US President asking him to free the Five. They expressed their concern for the five Cubans, who they considered are "victims of the ongoing political differences between the United States and Cuba," says the letter that was sent to ACN by the Cuban embassy in Brussels.
The letter explains that the five men were sentenced to serve extremely severe terms of imprisonment - ranging from 15 years to double lifetimes in prison. It also notes that Cuban men were sent to the US to infiltrate into a number of anti-Cuba organizations that are known to be responsible for different terrorist attacks on Cuban targets.
"Throughout the years these terrorist attacks have killed more than 3,000 Cuban citizens and left over 2,000 others disabled for life," the signatories, Dirk Tuypens, Chris Lomme, Joke Devynck, Daan Hugaert and Jonas Geirnaert noted in the letter.
"Today we would like to say to you: 'Free the five, yes you can.' Not in a cynical way, not to mock you, but because we truly believe that change is indeed possible," concluded the artists' letter.
Other people who travelled from different parts of the country to request the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labaņino and Rene Gonzalez, sent messages to the five Cuban revolutionaries wishing them a Happy New Year, reported Prensa Latina.
