A century of Jim Crow laws barred black families in the South from certain schools and jobs. Social Security benefits were not available at first to domestic and agricultural workers, the occupations of most African Americans at that time.

The biggest rally was held at Kalaikunda air force base where the joint exercises took place. More than 1.5 million people gathered at the Kendua grass field adjacent to the air force base and started to raise tumultuous slogans against US imperialism and against the joint exercises, right from the morning until sundown. The assemblage covered the full 20 acres of the field.

On Nov. 2, the illegal government of de facto Haitian Prime Minister Gérard Latortue filed a civil lawsuit against exiled Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and eight others in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida “to recover money stolen from the people and Government of Haiti.”
