Last October 7 2005, Belgium witnessed a 24-hour general strike the first in more than 12 years. The social democratic trade union federation (Federation Generale du Travail de Belgique or FGTB, with more than 1.3 million members) had called for a general strike because the workers opposed the prolongation of their employment career by 5 years thus limiting the access to early retirement schemes.

We have been lied to about the war. But not only that. The party has been manipulated so that it has not been allowed to discuss the issue properly. The Labour leaders have got so nervous of criticism that when I shouted the single word "nonsense"- when the Foreign Secretary sought to paper over the issue with smooth words - party officials sent the bouncers in. Even one word of criticism, it seems, was too much.

Neoliberalism, a strategy of finance capital, was implemented in France at the beginning of the 1980s. Circumstances were that it was not imposed by a Reagan or a Thatcher, but with a French touch by successive “socialist” and right-wing governments. Marked by measures of financial austerity, debt restructuring and anti-inflation measures, the neoliberal turning point was resolutely and definitively adopted by the Socialist Party (PS) controlled government in 1984.

There are moments in history where you need a bit of irony to get you though and to keep you going. This week British imperialism unashamedly celebrated the Battle of Trafalgar, their defeat of the French and the consolidation of their empire across the globe. We will have the leader of that same imperialist tradition Tony Blair in a few days time striding across a green lawn lauding the great advance made by the contemporary imperialist powers to help the worlds poor, in the form of the miniscule debt relief.

The Communist Party of Britain political committee drew attention to the refusal of pro-constitution politicians to accept the clear decisions by French and Dutch voters to reject it. John Haylett told the committee that, "...But both the French and Dutch campaigns highlighted the institutionalisation of neoliberalism across the continent and, in the Netherlands, there was the added factor of resentment at the concentration of power among the larger countries.”
