Time to talk about the issues

Where ever I travel in Minnesota people have four main things on their minds as we head into the election: Ending the war in Iraq; How can we get Universal Healthcare like the Canadians have; Ending poverty wages; and, What can be done to stop the robbery at the gas pumps.

On the issue of poverty wages.

Many politicians are talking about creating jobs that are good paying jobs. These jobs never materialize. It is all election bull.

Shouldn't all jobs be good paying jobs? If a job needs to be done the employee working at the job should be paid a living (non-poverty) wage as defined by the United States Department of Labor it is as simple as that.

Why is this so hard for politicians to grasp? Maybe because they don't know what it means to have to try to live from paycheck-to-paycheck on a poverty wage?

Recently on a trip to Michigan I met with a group of people in Greenville, Michigan who lost their jobs when Electrolux closed its operation there and moved south of the border to make kitchen appliances. Betsy DeVos, the head of the Michigan Republican Party and a big Bush booster said the whole problem of unemployment is caused by workers themselves because workers are demanding too high pay for the little they do. Her recommendation is to eliminate all minimum wage legislation and let the market determine wages. This kind of thinking is what her father-in-law, Richard Devos--- one of the owners of Amway Corporation--- calls "compassionate capitalism."

If George Bush gets elected to a second term maybe he will take Betsy DeVos' advice and eliminate minimum wage legislation completely.

If this isn't reason enough to defeat George Bush and this corporate bunch of thieves I don't know what is?
